Edna Josephine Hemingway Sharpe

1885-1914

1910

Edna Josephine Hemingway Sharpe, holding Madeline Sharpe, born June 8, 1910.

Many thanks and much love to Carolyn Rubins Clark, daughter of Madeline Sharpe Rubins, and her husband Bruce for providing these and many other photos.

These are the only family photos that we have of our beloved Grandmother, Edna.

This photo appears to have been taken earlier than 1910.  It might have been Edna's graduation picture from Auburn Academic

High School .

Edna Josephine Hemingway was born and raised in Auburn, in the Finger Lakes Region of Upstate New York.  Her Hemingway roots in America date back into the 1630's, when her 4th Great Grandfather, Ralph Hemingway, landed in Roxbury, MA, as an indentured servant, in what is considered an early American settlement.  Click here to view Edna's Family Tree  from Ancestry.com.

Note that in the Hamm/McKain/Hamingway Family Tree in Ancestry.com, Edna's family Tree descends many more generations to before 1,000 AD and encompasses many family branches on the Tree.   Much has been written and documented about the Hemingways on America.  In addition to Ancestry.con, another excellent Source of knowledge on the Hemingway (aka Hemenway or Heminway) is on-line here.

Edna attended the Academic High School in Auburn.  Click here to read Edna's Auburn NY Academic High School Senior publication, "The Silhouette".  It is evident that Edna excelled in High School, achieving Honor Roll status, participating in plays and debates, and co-publishing "The Silhouette".  It was in "The Silhouette" that  Edna's middle name and her intended College, the NY State Normal College in Albany, later named The University of Albany, were discovered.  Perhaps those college plans were changed, for In 1904, 2-years after High School, the Auburn City Directory listed Edna as a Teacher in that city.  Other documents revealed that Edna taught for 3-years at Auburn's Fulton Street School.

Edna and John Sharpe were married on August 11, 1908.  The 1910 Federal Census listed them as married, ages 34 and 24, and living in Sterling, Cayuga County, New York.  John was an ordained Presbyterian minister, having received his DD Degree from the Auburn Theological Seminary.

By 1913, John, Edna, and 3-year old daughter, Madeline Sharpe, had moved to Cleveland Ohio, where Jeanne Hemingway Sharpe was born on December 7, 1913.

The greatest tragedy presented on this Website is the death of Edna Hemingway Sharpe.  After giving birth to Jeanne, Edna  developed a Peritonitis infection and died on January 5, 2014.
