Depression years must have been difficult, however Jeanne never talked with John about that.  Upon reflection, this is unusual, as so many people were severely impacted by those circumstances.  On the other hand, Jeanne always saw things in a positive light.  She would say, "Look on the bright side", a tenant that greatly influenced John and his largely positive attitudes and behaviors.

Bud's family business as he grew up was construction.  The Hamm Brothers built many of the homes in Wheeling, along with commercial projects.  Bud and his cousin from Martins Ferry built Bud and Jeanne's home at 10 Homewood Ave. , on the banks of Wheeling Creek in the Pleasanton Neighborhood of Wheeling, .  In the late 1980's, while John was visiting Jeanne in Wheeling, and during a time when he was intently interested in and pursuing genealogy, John visited with Bud's first cousin, Tom Hamm, and learned of his participation in the building of 10 Homewood Ave.  Upon entering his cousin's home, John was greeted with a familiar photograph, that of the Hamm Brothers, Bud's father and his brothers, taken in the teens or early 20's.  That photo is on the Nelson (Bud) Hamm page.
